He would have previously considered the fact that he spent hours cutting pieces for the hypocritical stone throwers just another coincidence. There sure seemed to be a lot of coincidences in Natchez, Mississippi. And if he were to take the time to string them together, then there might have seemed to be some sort of pattern to it all, some predisposed objective even that was being messily worked toward. Of course, he didn’t believe in such things. Instead, he attributed blame for all these emotional excursions on an unwelcome intrusion of guilt. There was no guilt in New York. Everyone did exactly what they wanted without ever considering the possible impact to others. It was a far less complicated and infinitely less demanding. . 194
